Our purchase of Tandarra also came with a small herd of gorgeous Australian Cashmere Goats. They are an intelligent and hilarious breed of animal. These goats were purchased for weed management however our first attempt to rotate them into other paddocks turned out to be one of the most hilarious and memorable first experience of managing these animals.
With the daughters helping out, all of us tried to round up the mob and were quickly deflated and defeated. After resorting to food, we eventually moved them into the adjacent paddock, and feeling very pleased. On waking up the next day, daughter Renee came running in to say the Goats were ‘gone’.
Our heart sank, thinking of the difficulty ahead of us of rounding them up if they’d ventured into our neighbour’s farm ( not a good way to introduce yourselves to your new neighbours!).
It wasn’t long before we discovered they were all safe and sound back in their old paddock, where they put themselves and have remained there! We now have the most wonderful weed free paddock in the district. We also accepted the fact we were one paddock down on rotating the other livestock through and needed somewhere to keep our Purebred Stud Texel Rams (see below) safe from our Ewes when not mating, so we nervously trialled running them together with the Cashmere.
The second thing I learnt with cashmere goats, a very small animal with a very large attitude - they quickly put our ginormous rams in their place! We farm these delightful animals for their magnificent fibre, processed with our Alpaca Fleece and Dohne Merino Sheep’s wool. Contact Us (hyperlink).
